- Airline size
- A large airline carried 2 million or more passengers worldwide in each of the two previous calendar years (APPR s.1). A small airline flying on behalf of a large one has the large airline's obligations. The CTA lists Air Canada (including Jazz and Rouge), WestJet, Sunwing, Air Transat, Flair and Porter as large Canadian airlines; other Canadian airlines are small.

- Compensation is owed only when the delay or cancellation was within the airline's control and not required for safety.
- Notice
- You must have been told 14 days or less before departure.
- Distance
- APPR amounts don't depend on distance.
- Extraordinary circumstances
- No compensation when the cause was outside the airline's control (for example weather, air traffic control or a security threat) or required for safety (for example an unscheduled repair). Rebooking and refund rights can still apply: see the CTA guide.
Claim deadline
Send your written claim to the airline within 1 year of the delay or cancellation. The airline has 30 days to pay or explain why not. After that you can complain to the Canadian Transportation Agency for free.

If none of these rules covers your flight, the Montreal Convention (Art. 19) may still let you claim proven costs caused by an international delay, up to 6,303 SDR per passenger, within 2 years.
